Honest comparison
WebProud vs a freelancer
A good freelancer is often the cheapest way to get a proper site; the differences are cover, life after launch and who owns the result.
The short version
What A freelancer is, and where we differ.
Plenty of excellent websites are built by one person working from a spare room. A freelancer is often cheaper than any studio, you deal with them directly, and the best ones care about your project as much as you do. If you find one with a solid portfolio and happy clients, you may not need anything else.
We should be honest here: WebProud is a small senior team, not a big agency, so we are closer to a freelancer than to the alternative on our large agency page. The differences are practical ones. We have cover when someone is ill or on holiday, we host and look after sites after launch, our prices are fixed and published, and our contract says in plain words that you own the site, the domain and the data.
Our honest verdict
A good freelancer is a genuinely good choice and we would never tell you otherwise. The questions to ask are what happens when they are busy or ill, who hosts the site after launch, and whether the contract gives you ownership. If you want those answers settled in advance, at a fixed price, that is where we fit.

Eight things to weigh up.

Choose A freelancer if…
- You have found someone with a strong portfolio who you trust and get on with.
- Your budget is below £500 and you are happy to arrange hosting yourself.
- You want one named person for everything and are comfortable with the odd delay.
Choose WebProud if…
- You want a fixed, published price and a written promise that you own everything.
- You want hosting, backups and updates handled by the same people who built the site.
- You want someone to answer when your usual contact is on holiday.
Is WebProud a freelancer or an agency?
Neither, really. We are a small senior studio. Your site is built directly by an experienced developer, but there is cover, managed hosting and a fixed price list behind that.
What should I check in a freelancer’s contract?
Who owns the design and code when you have paid, who owns the domain, where the site is hosted, and what support is included after launch. If the contract does not say, ask before you sign.
Can WebProud take over a site a freelancer built?
Usually, yes. We can host and maintain an existing site, and if it needs a rebuild we will say so plainly rather than patching it indefinitely.
