Choosing well

Five rules for a domain you won’t regret.

  1. Say it out loud. If you have to spell it over the phone, it’s too clever. Avoid hyphens, numbers and deliberate misspellings.
  2. Match the extension to the customer. UK trade and local services: .co.uk. Selling abroad or building a brand: .com, with the .co.uk alongside.
  3. Buy the obvious neighbours. If you take the .co.uk, take the .uk and the .com if they’re free. Forward them to the main site. It stops copycats and typos going elsewhere.
  4. Register it in your own name. Not your web designer’s, not your nephew’s. The registrant should be you or your company. We always do it that way.
  5. Set auto-renew and a reminder. Lapsed domains are picked up by squatters within hours. Renew for several years at once if cash flow allows.
